HID Conversion Kits

An HID conversion kit takes a vehicle that came with halogen headlights and upgrades it to xenon — the brightest light available — without replacing the headlight assemblies. You keep your factory housings; you just swap in xenon bulbs and add a ballast to power each one. For the right vehicle it’s a bolt-in upgrade, and this page walks through whether yours is a good candidate and what the conversion involves. We’ve done xenon conversions since 2004.

Is my vehicle a good candidate?

Two things decide it: your bulb size and your housing type. If your car runs standard halogen bulbs, there’s a kit for it — drop your vehicle into the Year/Make/Model finder at the top of the page and we’ll match the correct kit and flag any quirks. The bigger consideration is your housing: xenon HID belongs in a projector, where the lens controls that intense beam into a clean cutoff. In an open reflector, HID can scatter and glare, so for low beams a projector is strongly preferred. Many drivers run HID in projector low beams and leave reflector high beams alone, or choose LED there instead.

What the conversion involves

Each side gets a xenon bulb and a ballast. The bulb seats in your factory socket; the ballast steps 12V up to the high voltage that strikes the arc and mounts behind the housing with the included hardware. Budget 30–45 minutes. If your vehicle has daytime running lights or a computer that watches headlight current, you’ll add an anti-flicker or relay harness so the ballasts get steady, direct power — the finder tells you if that’s needed.

A few things to expect

  • A brief warm-up. Xenon takes a few seconds to reach full brightness — that’s normal, not a fault.
  • Replace and match in pairs. Keep both sides the same color temperature.
  • Aim after install. A quick adjustment keeps your brighter beam courteous to oncoming drivers.

Every kit ships free over $75 with a lifetime warranty and a 60-day guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Can any car be converted to HID?

If your vehicle uses halogen bulbs, it can almost always be converted. The main consideration is housing type: HID performs best in projector housings. In open reflectors it can scatter, so projectors are preferred for low beams. Use the finder to confirm your fit.

Why does HID need a projector housing?

A projector uses a lens to focus xenon's intense beam into a sharp, controlled cutoff. An open reflector can throw that light unevenly and glare at oncoming traffic. For a clean, safe low beam, HID belongs in a projector.

What is a relay or anti-flicker harness and do I need one?

It is an add-on that feeds the ballasts steady power directly from the battery. Vehicles with daytime running lights or current-monitoring computers may flicker or error without it. Our Year/Make/Model finder flags whether your vehicle needs one.

Why do my new HID lights take a second to get bright?

That brief warm-up is normal for xenon. The bulb reaches full brightness a few seconds after startup as the arc stabilizes. It is a characteristic of HID, not a defect.

Should I convert both low and high beams to HID?

Many drivers convert projector low beams to HID and either leave the high beams stock or use LED there, since high beams are often in reflector housings. The finder shows your sizes and housing so you can choose per position.
