HID (Xenon) Bulbs
HID bulbs — short for high-intensity discharge, and usually called xenon — are the brightest headlight bulbs on the road, and they come in two very different families. Buy the wrong family and it simply won’t work, so the first thing to get straight is whether you have a factory-HID vehicle or you’re converting from halogen. We’ve sorted xenon lighting for drivers since 2004, and once you know which bulb you need, the rest is easy.
The two kinds of HID bulbs
D-series bulbs (D1S, D2S, D3S, D4S, D5S, and the “R” variants) are for vehicles that rolled off the line with xenon headlights. If your car came with HIDs and one side has gone pink, dim, or dark, you’re replacing a worn capsule with the same D-number. A few things matter here: D1 and D3 have the igniter built into the bulb base, while D2 and D4 use a separate igniter in the ballast — so a D1 and a D2 are not interchangeable even though they look similar. D3 and D4 are the mercury-free, more environmentally friendly generations.
H-series and 9000-series HID bulbs (H1, H7, H11, 9005, 9006, and more) aren’t sold as bare bulbs for a stock car — they’re the bulbs inside an HID conversion kit, which pairs the xenon bulb with a ballast to upgrade a halogen vehicle to xenon.

Color temperature and lifespan
Xenon bulbs are sold by color temperature in Kelvin. Around 4300K is the warm, slightly-yellow factory look, and it actually throws the most usable light. 6000K is the popular clean white. Push past 8000K and the beam turns blue and starts losing real-world output, especially in rain. HID bulbs don’t burn out like halogens — they slowly dim and shift color over years, so when one side changes, replace both to keep your light even.

What is the difference between D1S, D2S, D3S, and D4S bulbs?
They differ in igniter design and generation. D1 and D3 have the igniter built into the bulb; D2 and D4 use a separate igniter in the ballast, so they are not interchangeable. D3 and D4 are the newer mercury-free versions. Always match the exact D-number your vehicle uses.
How do I know if my car has factory HID headlights?
Factory HID (xenon) headlights usually have a bright bluish-white beam, often a small self-leveling motor, and a D-series bulb (like D3S) behind the housing. If your old bulb is labeled with a D-number, you have factory HID. Our Year/Make/Model finder will confirm it.
Why is one of my HID bulbs turning pink or dim?
That is normal aging. Xenon bulbs gradually lose brightness and shift color (often toward pink or purple) over several years of use. It means the bulb is near the end of its life. Replace both sides as a pair so your headlights match.
Can I put HID bulbs in a car that came with halogens?
Not as bare D-series bulbs. To go from halogen to xenon you need an HID conversion kit, which includes the correctly-sized bulb plus a ballast to power it. Use the finder to get the right kit for your vehicle.
What color temperature is best for HID bulbs?
4300K to 6000K gives the most usable light and a clean white-to-slightly-warm look. Higher numbers (8000K and up) look bluer but actually reduce how well you see, particularly in bad weather.
