HID Conversion Kits
An HID kit — also called an HID conversion kit or xenon kit — turns your halogen headlights into true xenon. Xenon HID is the brightest light you can put in a headlight: it produces a dense, far-reaching beam and roughly three times the output of halogen, which is why drivers who spend time on dark highways and back roads swear by it. What’s in a kit, and how it goes in
A kit includes xenon bulbs in your vehicle’s size plus a slim ballast for each side. The ballast is the key part — it steps battery voltage up to the several-thousand volts needed to strike the xenon arc, then regulates it. The bulb drops into your factory socket and the ballast mounts behind the headlight with the included hardware. Most installs run 30 to 45 minutes. On vehicles with sensitive electronics or daytime running lights, an anti-flicker or relay harness keeps the ballasts fed with clean, constant power.
Choosing the right HID kit
- Get your exact fit. Low beam, high beam, and fog can all be different sizes — use the Year/Make/Model finder at the top of the page and we’ll match the kit to your vehicle.
- Projector housings shine. HID belongs in a projector, where the lens controls that intense beam into a sharp cutoff. In an open reflector, HID can scatter and glare, so projectors are strongly preferred for the low beam.
- Color temperature. 4300K throws the most light; 6000K is the clean white most people want. Bluer than that trades real output for looks.
HID or LED?
HID still wins on pure distance and beam density down the road. LED wins on install simplicity (no ballast) and instant, full brightness the moment you flip the switch. If maximum throw is the goal and you have projectors, HID is a great choice; if you want the easiest upgrade, look at our LED kits. How is an HID kit different from an LED kit?
An HID kit uses xenon bulbs and ballasts to create a dense, far-reaching beam with the most distance of any headlight type. An LED kit uses diodes, needs no ballast, and turns on at full brightness instantly. HID edges out LED on throw; LED is the simpler install. Both far outperform halogen.
Do HID kits need a ballast?
Yes. Every HID bulb requires a ballast to ignite and regulate the xenon arc — it is what steps your 12V power up to the high voltage the bulb needs. Each kit includes one slim ballast per side, which mounts behind the headlight housing.
Will an HID kit work in my reflector headlights?
HID performs best in projector housings, where the lens controls the intense beam. In open reflector housings it can scatter light and glare at oncoming traffic, so we recommend projectors for HID low beams. If you have reflectors, an LED kit is often the better-behaved choice.
Why do my HID lights flicker or throw an error?
Some vehicles monitor headlight power and don't recognize a ballast's draw, causing flicker or a warning. An anti-flicker or relay harness solves it by feeding the ballasts steady, direct power. Our finder flags whether your vehicle needs one.
How long does it take to install an HID kit?
